You may have seen the words “fossil fuel derived carbon.” Here’s what that means in simple terms.

There’s a test called Carbon-14 testing. It can tell the difference between two kinds of material:

• Real plants: these show carbon that is “modern,” close to 100%. Living plants pull carbon from the air today.
• Petroleum (fossil fuel) material: this shows almost no modern carbon. Why? Because it’s millions of years old, so its “modern” carbon reads near zero.

So this test is a great way to check: is this real plant material, or is it something man-made from petroleum?

Why How You Test Matters, a Lot

Here’s the part most people never hear, and it’s the key to everything.

A finished capsule is not just turmeric. Like almost every supplement made anywhere, a capsule also has tiny amounts of “manufacturing helpers.” These are small ingredients that help make the product. Some of those helpers can be petroleum-based. That’s normal and common across the whole industry.

To be clear: those helpers are not synthetic turmeric, and they are not synthetic curcumin. They are ordinary processing ingredients used to make capsules.

Now here’s the catch. A Carbon-14 test reads all the carbon you give it, all at once. It can’t tell “turmeric carbon” from “helper carbon.” So if you test a whole capsule, even 100% real turmeric can look “part synthetic,” because the test is also reading those tiny helper ingredients. That’s not the turmeric. That’s the helpers.
